Website vs Web App vs Mobile App: Which Does Your Business Need?

"Should we build a website, a web app or a mobile app?" is one of the most common questions we hear. The terms overlap, and the wrong choice can mean paying for features your customers never use. Here is how they differ, and how to decide.

What is a website?

A website mainly presents information: who you are, what you offer and how to contact you. It is the foundation of your online presence and the main way new customers find you through Google. Business websites, landing pages, portfolios and blogs all fall into this category.

Choose a website when your goal is to build trust, generate enquiries and rank in search results.

What is a web application?

A web app is interactive software that runs in the browser. Users log in, enter data and get work done — think booking systems, customer portals, dashboards or SaaS products. There is nothing to install, and it works on any device with a browser.

Choose a web app when customers or staff need to complete tasks, manage accounts or work with data.

What is a mobile app?

A mobile app is installed from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Apps can use phone features such as notifications, the camera, location and offline access, and they suit services people use frequently — ordering, fitness tracking, delivery or loyalty programmes.

Choose a mobile app when your users will return often and benefit from notifications or device features.

Quick comparison

  • Website — best for visibility, trust and enquiries; found through Google
  • Web app — best for tasks and data; runs in any browser, no install
  • Mobile app — best for frequent use; push notifications and device features
  • Cost and complexity usually increase from website to web app to mobile app

Which should you build first?

For most businesses the answer is a fast, well-optimised website first — it is the most affordable way to get found and generate leads. Add a web app when you have processes to digitise or customers who need self-service. Invest in a mobile app once you have an audience that will use it regularly.

Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native can deliver Android and iOS apps from a single codebase, which lowers the cost when the time for an app comes.

Still not sure?
